Free beginner-friendly tennis sessions at Poplar Recreation Ground

If you’re looking for an enjoyable way to improve your physical health, Community Tennis for Health is a good place to start.

These beginner-friendly sessions offer a relaxed introduction to tennis, with a focus on moving your body and feeling good, rather than competition or getting things right.

The sessions are led by experienced Courtside Tower Hamlets coaches and are designed to help people take part comfortably, whatever their starting point.


What the sessions are like

You can expect:

  • Simple cardio drills suitable for all fitness levels

  • A focus on activity and enjoyment, not scores

  • A relaxed and welcoming environment

  • Outdoor sessions in a local park setting

You can go at your own pace and take breaks whenever you need. At the beginning of sessions you’ll be asked about any health conditions that might increase your risk of injuries so you can be supported in the right way.


Who the sessions are for

These sessions are especially suitable if you:

  • Are new to tennis

  • Want to support or improve your physical health

  • Have a long-term health condition  

  • Are looking for a fun way to be more active

No previous experience is needed, and you don’t need to feel “fit” to take part. You can come with a friend or come alone and we’ll find you someone to pair with. If you’re still not sure if tennis is right for you, come along to a session and find out for free!


What do I need to bring?

  • Wear comfortable clothes that you can move well in – avoid jeans or anything too tight or that you can trip on
  • You’ll need to wear trainers – no slides or shoes which will make it more likely that you’ll slip and get injured

  • It’s a good idea to bring some water to drink

All tennis equipment will be provided during the session.

Open sessions for adults

(Please note : there won’t be a session on Bank Holiday Monday 25 May, and sessions will resume the following Monday)

All sessions are at the tennis courts in Poplar Recreation Ground, 5 Hale St, London E14 0BX


These sessions are delivered by Courtside Tower Hamlets, in partnership with Poplar and Limehouse Health Network and Well One.
